venice, vera, & vespas

it's rare for me to find a new favorite thing. things I like, sure, but not an actual real life favorite thing. well, today I discovered 3 of them!

one of the best places to spend a Sunday in Manhattan: the moma.

I visited a remote little corner of the fifth floor and found a collection of 6 pieces by Alexandra Exter, Russian avant garde artist, lover of Venice (i'm determined to go someday) and personal friend of Pablo Picasso...

tres cute, no?

Vera Neumann, 2nd of my discovery-filled sunday. She was an artist turned textile designer using post WWII silk parachute to screenprint her designs. Vera designed everything for a 36" square scarf. A ladybug was her trademark (known for good luck, long life and happiness) In the 1950's her company grew and as many as 500-600 designs a year were created... In the 60's a clothing line was added and the fabric was designed with the garment in mind. She worked 6 days a week, reserving Tuesdays for her hair appointment and the board meeting in Manhatten (by the way, the board accommodated her schedule).

personal side note: my Nana reserves Tuesdays for hairdos as well (and loves silk scarves.)

oh, and the Vespa ...always wanted one. well today I found the one ...a 1955 Vespa Gran Sport 150. The most amahhzing Vespa ever! If this moped were a man, I would marry it.

today at the park i saw

the typical landmark

the beautiful cloudy sunset

...and the lonely little umbrella.
(found this little guy frozen in the middle of the Pond ...maybe he's just independent)

today's forecast...

current weather: continued blizzard ...22 hours and counting...
(which is fine because I got a chance to sludge around in my boots like a 5-year-old)

current bizarre obsession: Flight of the Conchords (particularly Bret ...& his wardrobe)

excitement of the day: waking up to chocolate chip pancakes made by my roomie
...or flatmate, as Bret & Jemaine would say.

excitement of the week: hearing the girls of Vena Cava at this week's Parsons 'Talk With' event
...& the new Duane Reade on 8th ave, but don't tell anyone.

current thing missing at the moment: this waiting for me at the top of the stairs:
(and having stairs.)

me? a blogger?

As I sit in my apartment on a snowy February day (with a head cold I might add ...not usually here in the middle of a Thursday) I find myself fishing around on the internet... Gmail, Twitter, numerous fashion blogs, googling 'cold remedies' and, of course, the inevitable Gilt Groupe (truely my 'gilty' pleasure). After a bit of technology overload and a bottle of Vick's cold medicine to blame, I somehow fall subject to clicking on 'create your own blog'.

New York winters are as unpredictable as the antics on Keeping Up With the Kardashians (current channel on: E!) ...rainy, snowy, 60 degrees, 20 degrees, rainy again, snowy again. As depressing as this day sounds, I wouldn't have it any other way. After all, if I have to be sick somewhere, New York City is a pretty great place to be.

So here it is, Acorns to Apples, the chronicles of my life as a North Carolina born 20-something living in New York City (cue Nick Gilder's "Hot Child in the City" circa 1978) as I go from the City of Oaks to the Big Apple.

Oh, & ps: all those Carrie Bradshaw "Another thing I love about New York is..." quotes, yeah, I'm finding they're all true ;)
